The San Miguel Awards - 2010

Jesús Jimenez and Sergio Violante received the 2010 Miguel Award. Each year the Miguel Award is given to two graduates who exemplify the virtues of a San Miguel student.

8th Grade Shadow Day at Chino Latino

Each year, the San Miguel 8th grade students spend an afternoon at the Parasole restaurant Chino Latino as part of the restaurant industry's Groundhog Job Shadow Day. Students shadow the staff and learn about their jobs. During the event students prepared sushi, cleaned corn, folded napkins, and served water. After working in the kitchen, students  enjoy a delicious meal sponsored by Chino Latino.

7th Graders Visit St. Mary's University

The seventh grade spent a day visiting St. Mary's University in Winona. They toured the campus and met with a group of Latino university students to learn what it is like to go to college. SMU President Brother William Mann, FSC, hosted the students in his office to talk about the First Generation to College Program, a new initiative being launched at SMU to provide financial and academic support to students who are the first in their families to pursue a college degree. Students also toured St. Mary's Press and enjoyed a hike in the senic bluffs that surround the campus.

Math Classes Celebrate Pi Day

During math classes, students celebrated Pi Day (March 14th) by participating in activities meant to enrich and deepen the student's understanding of pi. The activities included measuring the circumference and the diameter of circular objects using a string and a ruler, calculating the ratio for each object, and comparing the results to the actual value of pi. (3.14159265...) At the end of classes students, teachers and staff enjoyed apple, blueberry, and cherry pie.

Figures in Motion - 7th Grade Art

Students benefit from art class two days every week, where they learn both art appreciation and technical applications. Seventh graders recently sculpted figures in motion, capturing action using a combination of materials to create the figure. Pictured here is a 7th grade student painting his sculpture representing "The Hulk" superhero hitting the pavement.

Las Posadas Celebration

Students, staff and families of San Miguel celebrated "Las Posadas" (Spanish for "the inns"), a Christmas tradition that symbolized the journey of Mary and Joseph in search of shelter. Pictured here are sixth grade students who performed a narrated play that re-enacted the journey of Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of a place to stay before the birth of Jesus. Following the play, the choir performed a Christmas concert, and students and their families enjoyed a meal together, including "ponche navideno", the traditional hot Christmas punch of Mexico.

STARS Soccer 2009

STARS Place 4th in Mpls Park & Rec 15U League

The San Miguel STARS soccer team placed 4th overall in the Minneapolis Park & Rec 15U Youth Soccer League this fall. There were 10 neighborhood teams that participated in the 15U open gold division. The final 2009 season record was 5 wins, 3 losses, and 1 tie, which tied the 3rd place team in points.

The STARS had a successful season and demonstrated perseverance, despite often playing in the rain. San Miguel Middle School is thankful for the hard work and support of volunteer coach Chris Funke who says, "the STARS really developed into a team that played high quality soccer."

Student Poetry

Miracles

by Emily, class of 2008

When a newborn baby is brought to the new world of God's creation
When you get a good grade in a class that you don't like
When you see your parents every day
When somebody talks to you for the first time
When you see your long lost friend
When a missing child has been brought home
When a doctor saves someone in a life and death situation
When you get into an accident and survive
When you get up every morning seeing the world
When you did a good deed today
When you have so much fun with your friends
When you go to another country safe and sound
When you were lost and now found by people who care about you
When you see your familly together in one place
When I see all the beautiful things around me,
I am grateful to be one of them.

Ofrenda Exhibit at MN History Center

San Miguel 7th grade students recently partnered with the Minnesota History Center to celebrate the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) by creating an ofrenda, a memorial altar for the departed. The History Center arranged for artist Eduardo Gutierrez to visit San Miguel and speak to the students about the custom of creating ofrendas. In the Mexican tradition, families create ofrendas to honor family members who have died.

In art class, students used boxes to create a nicho (a miniature ofrenda) in memory of a deceased family member, a Saint, or a famous Latino community leader. Students painted their nichos and decorated them with photographs, maps, clay, cardboard, tissue paper, or other symbolic objects to represent items that the deceased person enjoyed. Students also molded and painted sugar skulls, which are often used as a way to show that death is a natural part of the life cycle.

Class Trip to Dunrovin

San Miguel students enjoy canoeing the Dunrovin Christian Brothers Retreat Center located on the Minnesota side of the St. Croix river.
