Meet Our School Community

Brayan - 6th Grade Student

Brayan's favorite class at San Miguel is science. "It's fun and I like to learn a lot about weather and other science subjects." He appreciates the teachers at San Miguel because they help him stay focused.

His favorite experience while at San Miguel has been the class trip to Dunrovin Retreat Center. "We were able to play together and shoot off the rockets that we made in science class."

Brayan would like to attend DeLaSalle High School after graduation from San Miguel. His dream for the future is to be a soccer player and a teacher. During his free time, Brayan likes to play soccer and video games with his brother.

Juanita - 8th Grade Student Ambassador

One of Juanita's favorite experiences at San Miguel was serving as an 8th grade student ambassador at the 10th Anniversary Celebration in October 2009. At the event last fall, she was able to greet guests, enjoy delicious food and spend time with friends.

Juanita likes the small classes at San Miguel because the teachers have the time to focus on each student. Her favorite class is math because it is challenging and fun. "I like to be challenged, and I don't give up on solving problems." She plans on attending DeLaSalle High School next year. "I want to go to DeLaSalle because it is a college prep high school, and I want to go to college."

Juanita's dream for the future is to be either a chef or a cosmetologist. During her free time, she like to spend time at home cooking, reading, and also likes to go shopping at the mall.

Julio - 6th Grade Student

Julio is following in the footsteps of his sister Maria, who attended San Miguel and is now attending Edina High School. Julio likes the fact that he has made some really good friends at San Miguel. "We joke around and help each other when we need it.  I know my sister made long lasting friends at San Miguel and I think I will stay connected with my friends for many years."

Julio's favorite class is physicial education and enjoys playing soccer. "My friends and I play for the San Miguel STARS, our soccer team. Soccer helped me make friends with seventh and eighth graders."

After graduation, Julio plans on attending either Holy Angels or Edina High School. "After high school, I plan to go to college and then pursue my dreams. When I get older I want to be an architect and construction manager." In his free time when he's not playing soccer, Julio likes to spend time with his brother.

Deb Jessen - Board Member

Board Member Deb Jessen and her family hosted a Holiday Happy Hour - With a Purpose to benefit the students of San Miguel. More than 40 people joined Deb and her husband, Todd Strand, at their home in St. Paul. Julio, a San Miguel sixth grader, was present to share his experience.

In commenting on her involvement as a board member at San Miguel, Deb said, "We are all only a generation or two removed from the experience of the San Miguel students. I remember my grandmother telling me how she wished she could have gone to high school."

Deb and Todd believe that education is essential to succeed in life and want to help San Miguel students achieve the important milestones of high school graduation and a college education.

Fabian - 2009 STARS Most Valuable Player

Fabian received the award for the 2009 STARS Soccer Team Most Valuable Player. Coach Funke presented Fabian with a soccer ball as an award for his dedication to the team. He received the award because he played in almost every position, attended every game, and hardly ever missed a practice. Fabian likes to play forward so that he can run fast and score a lot.

In his free time, Fabian plays on three other soccer teams, including a team that travels outside of Minnesota. When he is not playing soccer, Fabian likes to draw.
